A Senate Working for the American People
-
Republicans have delivered on their promise to lead the Senate responsibly.
-
Congress has been reenergized, and it’s working again on bipartisan bills.
-
Under Republican leadership, the Senate is now known for its record of accomplishment, not the gridlock of the past.
The American people asked for a Senate that works as hard as they do. After seven months, the record is clear: Senate Republicans are making good on their promise to govern.
A Record of Success
Last month, National Journal took notice that “the new Republican-controlled Congress has accomplished much in its first six months.” By letting members participate in the legislative process, the Senate has achieved greater success than it had seen in years.
Under Republican leadership, the Senate put forward legislation to be amended by all members – something that they had been denied last year. USA Today noted that the “GOP-controlled Congress [is] working more and allowing more input from both parties in the Senate compared to recent legislative sessions.” Seven months into the first session of the 114th Congress, the Senate has allowed more votes on amendments than during the entire 113th Congress.
Putting in the Work
Senate Republicans have committed to get more done than in recent years. According to the Bipartisan Policy Center, the Republican-led Senate has worked more days through the first six months of this year than during the same period of the two previous Congresses.
So far this Congress, Republicans have abandoned the one-man-show that defined the Senate in the past few years and have reinvigorated the committee process. Senate committees have reported more than 165 bills that were crafted by consensus and ready for action on the floor.
“Congress is continuing to move in the right direction: staying in session more often, empowering committees to work together.”
– Former Senate Democrat Leader Tom Daschle, July 21, 2015
The American people trusted Senate Republicans to get Congress back to work on the things that matter most to them. Republicans have honored that trust.
