Reckless Spending on Democrats' Pet Projects

As Democrats rack up the tab on their reckless tax and spend spree, they have made sure to include enormous handouts for their pet projects. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who has sold their plan as “the culmination of my service in Congress,” nabbed a $200 million earmark for the Presidio Trust in her district. This is an organization Congress created to operate without taxpayer support. Democrats on the House Natural Resources Committee voted down multiple Republican amendments to redirect the funds, and Representative Steve Cohen defended the earmark bluntly: “Speaker Pelosi gets maybe a little bit more, and some of the leaders get a little bit more on some of these bills … the truth is, they should.”

Not be outdone, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer secured a massive East Coast earmark, or “Schu-mark,” for the New York City Housing Authority, after pledging to use “all of my power as majority leader” to do so. The House bill provides $80 billion for public housing. President Biden originally proposed $40 billion, but when New York lawmakers argued that their city’s public housing authority alone requires a $40 billion bailout, the final tally doubled. To ensure a New York carve out, the bill gives the secretary of housing and urban development broad discretion to determine where most of these new funds are spent. Normally the department would rely on a formula that ensures equity among states and other jurisdictions.

Sadly, self-dealing politics may be the only thing Americans aren’t surprised to find in this boondoggle.
