Border Security Status Report
- President Trump has built 81 miles of border wall since he took office and has authority and appropriations to build an additional 428 miles.
- Monthly border apprehensions in October were down significantly from the record numbers earlier this year, though they were up 114% for fiscal year 2019.
- U.S. Border Patrol estimates that an additional 147,000 people crossed the border illegally in 2019 and were not apprehended.
Apprehensions along the southwest border between ports of entry during fiscal year 2019 were more than double the previous year’s level. The monthly number of migrants caught has decreased significantly since spring, thanks in part to border security investments, increased cooperation from Mexico, and policies to ensure the integrity of our immigration system. However, as the Trump administration builds additional miles of wall, U.S. Border Patrol anticipates increased migrant flows in areas without walls as cartels adjust their tactics.
