Biden's Bad Year, By the Numbers
Joe Biden’s first year as president ended with skyrocketing prices, soaring COVID-19 cases, and millions of illegal border crossings; and many Americans are worse off than they were one year ago. In a flailing attempt to distract from the real problems facing families, Democrats capped their year in charge by using fake hysteria to try to break the Senate and take over the country’s elections.

INFLATION: Consumers are struggling with the worst inflation in 40 years: 7%. The Biden inflation tax meant the average American household had to spend $3,500 more in 2021 than they did to buy the same goods and services in 2019 or 2020. Wholesale prices in December increased by 9.7%, the biggest surge on record, while average hourly earnings could not keep up, rising by 4.7%. |
DEBT LIMIT: After Democrats inflicted a partisan $1.9 trillion spending boondoggle on the recovering economy in March, they raised the debt limit by $2.5 trillion in December, the largest increase ever. |
COVID-19: President Biden promised: “I’m not going to shut down the economy. I’m going to shut down the virus.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, COVID-19 cases are up 176% since he took office, with 43 million cases since Inauguration Day. New variants have surged, overwhelming hospitals, closing businesses, and creating supply chain breakdowns nationwide. |
JOBS: There are 136,000 fewer jobs after President Biden’s first year in office than CBO projected we would have – and that was their baseline without Democrats’ $1.9 trillion “COVID relief” law. President Biden claimed that if the law passed, employment would increase by 7.2 million. Despite Democrats getting exactly the partisan wish list they wanted, there are 1.1 million fewer people employed than they promised. |
GASOLINE PRICES: Gasoline prices rose 50% from December 2020 to December 2021, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. President Biden has made it his mission to destroy American energy. In the earliest days of his presidency, he took executive action to rescind the permit for the Keystone XL pipeline and ban new oil and gas leases on public lands and federal waters. |
ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION: Authorities reported encountering 1,855,023 people trying to cross our southern border between January and November 2021, nearly a 300% increase from a year earlier. President Biden promised that his administration would address the “root causes” of migration in Central America, but one year into his administration we have seen historic levels of illegal border crossings. |
AFGHANISTAN: Before President Biden withdrew U.S. troops from Afghanistan, his administration said that it would not lead to a Taliban takeover. The president’s chaotic retreat left 13 American service members dead, hundreds of American citizens stranded, and an estimated 62,000 of our allies abandoned in Afghanistan to face the wrath of the Taliban. |
RECKLESS TAX AND SPEND SPREE: President Biden and Democrats spent 2021 distracted by their radical plan to “transform” the nation’s economy. CBO has estimated that, without the gimmicks, their plan would cost $4.9 trillion and add $3 trillion to the debt. To sell their radical scheme, Democrats keep making big promises while denying the necessary tradeoffs. Every claim they make is contradicted by their next one. |
