2022 Policy Calendar

January 7 – Supreme Court hears oral arguments in legal challenges to the Biden administration vaccine mandate for large employers and health care facilities.

January 12 December inflation numbers released.

January 26 – Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee announces monetary policy updates, which will reflect current economic projections and ultimately affect employment, output, and prices.

January 31 – Public comment period ends for the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed rulemaking to regulate methane emissions from oil and gas producers.

February 1 – Deadline for the Biden administration to submit its budget request to Congress.

February 7 – Public comment period ends for EPA’s proposed rule to revise the definition of “waters of the United States.”

February 18 – The continuing resolution expires. Funding for the federal government and the following programs expire:

  1. National Flood Insurance Program

  2. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families

  3. Livestock Mandatory Reporting

  4. Authority of the secretary of health and human services to appoint candidates directly to disaster response positions in the National Disaster Medical System.

  5. $5,000 special assessment authority on people or entities convicted under the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act of 2015.

  6. Temporary emergency scheduling order placing fentanyl-related substances on Schedule 1 of the Controlled Substances Act.

  7. Increased federal medical assistance percentage for territories other than Puerto Rico.

April 15 – Deadline for Congress to complete action on a concurrent budget resolution for fiscal year 2023.

June 15 – Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee announces monetary policy updates.

June 26 – G7 summit begins in Germany.

June 29 – NATO summit begins in Spain.

June 30 – End of the term of the Supreme Court.

June – EPA expected to issue proposed rulemaking on National Ambient Air Quality Standards under the Clean Air Act.

September 21 – Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee announces monetary policy updates.

September 30 – Last day of fiscal year 2022. FDA user fee agreements expire; these allow the agency to collect fees to review and regulate pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

October 1 – First day of fiscal year 2023, by which time Congress should have completed action on all 12 appropriations bills for the new fiscal year.

November 8 – Election Day.

November 12 – IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig’s term expires.

December 31 – Certain tax extenders expire.

Legislation that has already expired, but for which a push for reauthorization could be made in 2022:

  1. Four major authorities of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act expired on March 15, 2020: the traditional “business records” provision; the “call detail records” authority; the “roving wiretaps” provision; and the “lone wolf” provision.

  2. The Violence Against Women Act expired in February 2019.
